This study explores “the rule of the octave” in the 17th and 18th c. treatises. It is significant to examine common features of general usages and gradual change of rules shown in the treatises, and the true entity of tonal characteristics: first, there is a necessary stage shown in the gradual change from hexachord to heptachord by solmization; second, each degree produces a chord which is a peculiar combination of intervals in all twelve tonalities; third, the root positions are presented only over and including 5th, and incomplete chords having 6th are over other scale degrees; fourth, in the case of 7th chord, the tritone is included in the dominant. It is clear that the harmonic relation is not merely “harmonic connection” but “harmonic progression” which is essential in tonal music.
