Medbh McGuckian, the first prominent Northern Irish female poet, has been focused on the relationship between creative activities and domestic life. In her first volume, The Flower Master, Medbh McGuckian ostensibly seemed to be concerned about representing the female body, female sexuality, and gender roles through poetic images. This study suggests that she raises issues regarding representations of female sexuality by female writers. However, she actually contends that the energy from the initiation of female sexuality has the capacity to be transposed into creative activities, such as writing, painting and gardening. Since Medbh McGuckian underlines writing by women among creative activities, this study analyzes her employment of ‘slippage’, an intentional mistake regarding poetic language arrangement, and her writing strategies ‘from within’ symbolic order of male dominant culture for raising women’s voices in Northern Ireland.
