Marianne Moore’s Poems on Poetics: Something “Genuine”

  • 5

Marianne Moore is a woman poet whose life and works have been compared to those of Christina Rossetti or Emily Dickinson by some critics. However, as a modernist, while possessing similar characteristics to those women poets, she uses far more advanced poetic techniques based on her scientific knowledge and close, minute observation of nature and its objects. Her poems are special and characteristic with ‘frigid,’ unexpected poetic words, images and subjects. Yet, in spite of difficult, inexplicable surfaces of her poems, close analysis of her poems reveals her soft, warm, civil nature inside. Her messages or poetics are either directly or indirectly stated in her poems with certain consistency. She insists that something individual or “genuine” should exist in poems themselves and maintains that an artist can make works of art more precious and worthy by doing unconscious effort rather than by showing off his or her craftsmanship with pride. If we follow those poems about her poetics, we can find that she is more considerate towards others while being strict and exact about herself.
