The poetry of G. M. Hopkins shows a kind of process searching inscape. His poetic life is the most passionate pursuit of inscape, and it is distinguished in his nature poems. The microscopic observation of nature is the first step of his poetic writing and he thought the inscape as his final goal. In this article we have researched the words and syntax of Hopkins’s poetry, proving poetic writing is also a process of his inscaping. His experiment of poetic technique is so extreme and radical that the ordinary readers can not understand or enjoy it, but it makes his poems the most peculiar thing. In this poetic experiment of Hopkins, we can feel a kind of energy and strange beauty. His words, rhythm and syntax create a good harmony with the meaning which he wants to express. So we can see elastic words and rhythm which expresses the pleasure felt from God’s creative grace in his nature poems, and the strained and twisted words and syntax which transfers the feeling of anguish and torture in his dark sonnets. We can also feel a kind of poetic energy in his poems, especially through the feelings in our ears. And I think all this resulted from his passionate pursuit of inscape.
