Empirical Research Trends in Music Performers’ Interpretation: Timing, Dynamics, and Gesture

악보를 통해 음악을 들여다보았던 전통적인 음악학은 수행성을 강조하는 사회과학적 흐름에 따라 연주로 관심을 확장하였고, 최근 20년간 연주학은 주목할 만한 성장을 보였다. 녹음된 음원에서 음악요소를 측정하여 표현성을 탐구하고 연주자의 해석을 설명하였던 초기의 인지 심리학적 연구들은 최근 인간학적이고 인문학적인 흐름에 맞추어 연주자의 신체와 정신에 집중하는 연구 방향의 전환을 보여준다. 2000년대 정부 차원의 지원을 받아 연주학의 흐름을 주도해 온 영국의 연주학은 고도의 디지털 장치와 기술을 통해 큰 프로젝트들을 수행하며 의미 있는 결과물들을 내놓았으나, 이러한 실증적 연구가 연주자에게 직접적인 도움을 주고 있는지에 대한 의문은 여전히 해소되지 않은 상태이다. 본 연구는 연주의 타이밍과 다이내믹, 연주자의 제스처 측정을 기반으로 한 연구들을 중심으로 연주자의 음악 해석에 관한 최근 연구 동향을 소개하고, 앞으로의 연주학이 나아갈 방향을 제안한다.

Following the tendency of emphasizing performativity in the social sciences and humanities, musicology, which traditionally focused on musical scores, has expanded its research interests to include performance. Consequently, performance studies have rapidly advanced over the past two decades. Cognitive psychologists, who previously explored expressiveness by measuring musical elements in recorded music to explain performers' interpretations, have shifted their research focus towards the body and mind of performers, in line with recent anthropological and humanistic trends. In the 2000s, the British government supported performance studies, which led to the development of large-scale projects using advanced digital devices and technologies. Nevertheless, the question of whether direct help is provided to performers remains unresolved. This study introduces empirical research trends on music performers' interpretations, specifically on the measurement of timing, dynamics, and gesture. It also suggests future directions for performance studies.
