현행 중학교 역사 교과서의 ‘서경 천도 운동’은 정치사적 맥락에서 서경세력 대 개경 세력이라는 대립항을 설정하여 간명하게 정리하는 데에 중심을 두었다. 이는 효율적으로 정보를 전달할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 그러나 역사상을 지나치게 단순화시켜 오해를 야기할 수 있으며, 역사적 사고력을 기를 수 있도록 지도하기에는 한계가 있다. 먼저 지금의 기준에서 쉽게 납득되지 않을 이 주장이 왜 당시 호소력을 지닐 수 있었는지를 학생들이 이해할 수 있도록 지도해야 한다. 완안부가급속히 세력을 확장하며 달라진 국제 정세로 고려는 큰 압박을 받고 있었다. 또한 각종 재변들이 이어지고 있었다. 절박한 상황에서 묘청은 ‘서경천도’가 바로 그 해법이라 제시했다. 이는 오래된 전통과 관행이었던 국도풍수에 기반한 것이었기에 큰 호응을 얻을 수 있었다. 다음으로는 묘청이 결국 반란을 일으켰다가 파국을 맞이하게 되는 과정을 契機的으로 파악할 수 있도록 지도할 방안을 모색하였다. 서경 궁궐 건설 뒤에도 묘청의 말과 달리 천하가 고려에 복속되지도 않았고, 각종 재앙들이 사라지지도 않았다. 묘청은 각종 술법과 ‘상서로운 조짐 출현’이라는선전을 이어갔지만, 약속했던 영험한 효과는 나타나지 않았다. 이에 점차비판이 강해졌고, 묘청은 결국 이를 해결하지 못하고 파국을 맞이하였다는 역사적 전개를 이해시켜야 한다.

To achieve this, students must first comprehend the historical context of the time, where Myocheong's argument gained support as Goryeo dynasty faced various disasters and changes in the international political situation. Second, students must learn why the movement failed as the promised positive effects did not materialize, and Myocheong failed to offer appropriate solutions, leading to exile and rebellion. Guiding students to understand the historical development process will significantly contribute to their historical thinking skills
