This paper discusses the trend of research on urban health in the disciplines of health and welfare by reviewing publications on urban health. Publications were searched using city and health related keywords in Korean Health and Welfare Institute’s open access repository. Research on urban health mainly discussed social issues, including family, housing, homelessness, socio-economic and physical environments in urban and rural areas. Local governments’ health and welfare policy budgets were also commonly addressed in studying the wellbeing of the residents in disadvantaged urban areas. Research on health impact assessments were found to address the broader social and environmental determinants of health in cities. As the findings illustrate, urban health research needs to continuously address those environmental and social determinants of urban health with a focus on transforming policy and governance through community empowerment.
