The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of small group learning in mathematics education. The results of the study showed that students in heterogeneous ability groups tended to exert positive effects on the cognitive and affective domains, whereas those in homogeneous ability groups tended to show negative effects. The results indicated that small group learning where interactions and cooperation among high- and low-ability students are encouraged in the teaching and learning process can help improve the efficiency of learning in mathematics education.
