Causal Relationship between the regional economic growth and the air cargo increase in China

중국의 지역경제 발전과 항공화물 증가에 대한 인과관계 분석

본 논문의 목적은 중국의 항공화물 증가와 경제성장 사이의 Granger 인과관계를 분석하는 것이다. 특히, 본고에서는 지역의 지리적, 산업적 특성, 경제적 규모에 따라 어떤 인과관계가 나타나는지 확인하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 본 논문에서는 2000년부터 2019년까지 중국 31개 성에서 20년간 총 620개의 패널 데이터를 수집하였다. 분석에 사용한 방법론은 정상성검정과 공적분검정을 거친 후 각 소집단에 대한 VECM 방법을 적용하였다. 이 논문의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 중국은 경제성장과 항공화물 증가 간에 국가 전체적으로 양방향 인과관계가 있다. 둘째, 지리적으로는 중부지역과 경제적으로는 중규모 지역에서 양방향 인과관계를 보이나 발해만, 장강 등 선진지역에서는 경제성장에서 항공화물 방향으로 Granger-인과관계를 보인다. 이는 중국의 동남부 지방은 이미 경제적으로 성숙단계에 진입했음을 보여주는 것이다. 셋째, 주강 삼각주와 둥베이 지역은 항공화물에서 경제성장 방향으로 인과관계를 나타내고 있다. 이는 중국 내 지역별 지리적 특성과 경제성장 수준을 반영한 것이라 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the Granger causal relationship between the increase of air freight and economic growth in China. In particular, this paper tried to check what kind of causality appears depending on the geographical and industrial characteristics of the region, and economic size. For this purpose, this paper collected panel data for 20 years from 2000 to 2019 for 31 provinces in China, which are in total 620 observations. The methodology used for the analysis is the VECM method on each sub-group after going through the normal stationary test and the cointegration test. The conclusions of this paper are as follows. First, China has a bidirectional causal relationship between its economy and air freight at the national level. Second, geographically, a bidirectional causal relationship is shown in the Central region and, economically, in the middle-size region, but in advanced regions such as Bohai bay and Yangtze river, a Granger-causal relationship is shown in the direction from economic growth to air freight increase. This shows that the southeastern provinces of China have already entered the stage of economic maturity. Third, the Pearl River Delta and the Dongbei region show a causal relationship in the direction from air freight to economic growth. This can be said to reflect the geographical characteristics of each region and the level of economic growth in China.
