The purpose of this study is to find out whether the pronunciation of loanwords may be a factor influencing the use of English among EFL learners in Korea by comparing the learners’ pronunciation with the original English pronunciation. The study compares the pronunciation of 300 loanwords selected from five topics (foreign words for teaching Korean, countries, animals, Greek and Roman mythology, and dinosaurs) with their original English pronunciation by classifying them into three groups: same pronunciation, similar pronunciation, and different pronunciation. The results show that 56% of loanwords are pronounced ‘similar’ or ‘different’ from their original English pronunciation. This finding suggests that loanwords may negatively affect Korean EFL learners’ use of English. To use loanwords naturally, the researcher recommends teachers correct pronunciation error among their student or provide separate instruction on loanwords to prevent the fixation of incorrect pronunciation in English learning.
