ChatGPT’s notes on the use of the 2022 curriculum: Focusing on the communicative functions and example sentences

This study investigates the appropriateness of the communicative functions and example sentences in the 2022 revised curriculum for English, using ChatGPT as an AI-based literacy tool. Prompts for ChatGPT were designed considering both a) the relationship between a function and its example sentences and b) the coherence among the examples within a function. In response, ChatGPT provided its interpretations of functions and example sentences, which were further analyzed, leading to the following results. First, ChatGPT accurately interpreted 83 of the 91 communicative functions based on the example sentences, which validates the current organization of the communicative functions in the curriculum. Second, guiding notes on the use of the curriculum emerged in three areas: a) naming of functions, b) interpretation of names, and c) use of example sentences. Third, it was observed that the example sentences in each function exhibited several variations in terms of context, meaning, and attitude. The implications of the study for English education encompass the effective application of AI tools such as ChatGPT for curriculum literacy tasks, the necessity for educators and learners to actively reinterpret the curriculum, and the consideration of diverse socio-linguistic factors when teaching communicative functions in English.
