The emergence of generative AI and PROMPT literacy: Focusing on the use of ChatGPT and DALL-E for English education

The main purpose of this paper is to examine the role that generative AI plays in English education. Specifically, it emphasizes the characteristics and types of generative AI tools that create text, images, and other multimodal content and explores their educational benefits and potential. This study suggests how ChatGPT and DALL-E can be used to enhance English language learning. The findings show that ChatGPT can improve language proficiency, provide immediate feedback, and offer genre-based learning opportunities, while DALL-E can stimulate language immersion and imagination. Based on these findings, this paper proposes a new term, “PROMPT literacy,” which refers to the characteristics that students need to have in an AI-based society. Taking the acronym PROMPT, it includes the following qualities: Problem-solving pioneer, Resilient resourcer, Open-minded organizer, Multidisciplinary thinker, Personalized discriminator, and Trend seeker. The paper further highlights the need for teachers to be at the forefront of this technological revolution to educate AI digital natives.
