The purpose of this study is to develop the K-COLT(Korean Communicative Orientation of Language Teaching) observation scheme and to describe how to use the scheme in actual Korean classrooms. K-COLT was developed based on the COLT Observation Scheme which has been actively utilized in second language classroom research since 1980. This study was conducted in two stages to verify the validity and reliability between observers of K-COLT. Through these two stages, the validity of K-COLT was confirmed and K-COLT turned out to be highly reliable with over 90% agreement between observers. Using K-COLT is a comprehensive way to code and calculate classroom events, therefore K-COLT can be utilized in a variety of Korean classroom studies. It is expected that more diverse and systematic Korean classroom research can be conducted in the future with wide use of K-COLT.
