Recently, the field of Korean language education has been changing rapidly. The interest of government has been increased and the institutionalization has been progressed rapidly, also. The representative example of the institutionalization is the fundamental law for the Korean language which had been legislated at the end of 2004 and took effect in 2005. The fundamental law for the Korean language contains the direction and contents of Korean government’s policy on Korean language. And it clarified the government’s stance on spreading of Korean language to foreign countries. It includes a curriculum of Korean language as a foreign language, teaching materials and Korean teacher training courses. And it has influenced on Korean education field. It specifically presents Korean teacher training course and its certification system And the certification system of Korean teachers has been operated according to the law. This study is aim to consider the meaning of the fundamental law for Korean language, its main contents, and the change of Korean education field since its taking effect.
