This study focuses on how to research overseas Koreans’ language use. First, three areas for the research have been proposed, which are the attitude toward Korean, Koreans and Korea, Korean language proficiency and Korean language life of overseas Koreans. This kind of research is concerned with L2 users or learners, so variabilities should be considered. Overseas Koreans' primary or second language should be considered because they are bilingual or live in bilingual societies. Other variabilities such as their residing areas, occupations, family members and age have been mentioned as divers variabilities as well. Last, it is emphasized that quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are complementarily needed. Especially, ethnographic methods such as in-depth interview, and conversation, classroom discourse and narrative discourse analysis have been proposed because existing research on the actual state of language use lacked.
