The aim of this paper is to examine the semantic and syntagmatic information of ‘sa-i’ and ‘dong-an’ based on corpus evidence. The most important task for language learners is acquiring a sufficiently large number of vocabularies. It is especially difficult to explain the subtle differences between usages of individual words. Therefore it is useful to apply learner’s dictionary as a supplementary device for effective vocabulary learning. Current Korean dictionaries, however, do not provide sufficient information regarding distinctive features of the synonyms. Learners can gain knowledge of meaning of a word from its context. In fact they may learn much more about the meaning of a word from its context as it is often the context that clarifies the meaning of a polysemous word. Each sense of a word can be associated with different context. Different semantic relationships and word associations can also be learned from contexts. Thus instructing syntagmatic relations of words should be the top priority in language teaching courses. Dealing such kind of lexical information would be quite meaningful for Korean language leaners. In this study, we categorize semantic features and contexts of two synonymous words ‘sa-i’ and ‘dong-an’ based on examples collected from a corpus.
