Although there have been much research done on Korean subject and object case marking errors of English native speakers, most of them focus on the identification and categorization of those errors and stop short of exploring underlying causes of those errors. The understanding of the underlying causes is very important because it is essential not only in correcting learner errors with proper feedback but also in developing better teaching materials and classroom instructions. This study identifies errors from interference of English and explores their underlying causes using comparative analysis of Korean and corresponding English constructions. The findings from the analysis show many subject and object case marking errors are related with Korean double nominative constructions with the predicate of an adjective or intransitive verb. In English, however, these constructions are usually expressed with the predicates of transitive verbs. Based on these findings, this study suggests how to teach certain Korean sentence constructions.
