This research takes a critical stance and analyzes research trends in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language as published in the Journal of Korean Language Education, one of the major journals in the field. A total of 330 studies, employing either primary research methods (i.e., quantitative, qualitative or combining both) or secondary research methods, published in the Journal of Korean Language Education from 1989 to 2005, were identified and analyzed. The result of the analysis indicates that secondary research was predominantly used over primary research (i.e., 76.4% vs. 23.6%, respectively). The study calls for concerted efforts in requiring courses in research methods as part of pre- and in-service training for KFL teachers and raising awareness with regard to ethical issues in conducting research in the field.
