Korean Language Performance Assessment and Fairness

Although performance assessment is concerned with assessing leaner’s communicative language ability in an authentic way, it has not received much attention in Korean language education. The goal of this paper is to report the implementation of performance assessment as a feasible teaching methodology catering for learner differences. The paper argues that fairness in the assessment is crucial in a diverse language background group and it can include the test taker’s topical knowledge, which was not previously regarded as important in language assessment. It also argues the need to replace the conventional language assessment scoring system with a flexible assessment scoring system which gives a different weight to different skills according to the type of assessment. For example, more weight could be given to knowledge than quality of language such as fluency and accuracy. The findings of this paper show that this flexible scoring system can prevent non-background students from thinking that they are in a disadvantaged position relative to background students.
