Advanced-level Korean Language Teaching for KAP-KOP Transitional Learners: Model of Task-Based KFOP-KU Program

The purpose of this paper is to share an interim result of an elite Korean language education program, so-called KFOP-KU (Korean Flagship Overseas Program - Korea University). This program purports to educate a group of American elite learners of the Korean language in respective subject area to meet the demands in the field. Language education in the past century has been concentrated on the training of learners from beginning to intermediate level or above within limited range, and halted there without any further challenge or trial. Not any significant effort has been made in the field in any language so far to overcome the limit by supporting and training the learners to advanced or upper proficiency levels in an institutional setting. KFOP-KU represents a new approach in the language pedagogy. Through a ‘Task-based language teaching’ approach in conjunction with enriched learning environment, learners are expected to reach so-called ‘general professional proficiency’ within a year’s period.
