Constraints on the usage of the agent in the Korean passive

This study investigates the constraints on the usage of the agent in Korean passive constructions with suffixal passive verbs. Unlike English passive constructions, which can express the agent very productively using the preposition ‘by’, the Korean suffixal passive does not often allow the agent to be realized on the surface. Furthermore, the agent is expressed with a selective agentive particle. This complicated usage cause difficulties not just to learners of the Korean language but also to Korean native speakers who show a tendency toward the overuse of a new agentive marker ‘-e uihaeso', which was introduced through the education and translation of foreign languages. Therefore, this study endeavours to discover the underlying rules which govern the usage of the agent and its regular markers ‘-ege’, ‘-e’ and ‘-lo’.
