This study examines communication problems in the Korean language classroom that occur during teacher-student interaction and analyzes them through discourse analysis. During the research phase, six classroom situations presenting Korean grammar and vocabulary were recorded and the teacher-student dialogue was analysed. For this research, I defined a communication problem as ‘a situation where the conversation has stopped progressing and the content of the conversation is in a suspended state.’ As a result, the problem situations are divided into dialogue avoidance, message delivery failure, and additional information request. Problem types were divided into 12 different categories: student unresponsiveness, impertinent response, incorrect sentence construction, an incomplete sentence construction, a mother tongue response, repetition of teacher- initiated utterance, rising intonation of sentence ending, requesting for elaboration, request for clarification, indirect elicitation expressing lack of understanding, partial repetition, and explicit expression of misunderstanding.
