It is not easy to teach and to learn Korean connectives for both teachers and learners since they reflect many grammatical features. Teachers should always consider what and how to teach the connectives. When teaching the connectives, teachers should consider many things, such as distinguishing which type of the connectives is, how those convey meanings, time constraints, subject constraints, word ending constraints, semantic and discourse constraints between sentences, situations in use, styles and so on. Situations in use and practice constructions of connectives are based on the those meanings since the constraints the connectives have are dependent on the meanings. That is to say, to be effective to teach the connectives, practices of situations in use and practice constructions should be based on the meanings of the connectives. ‘Gie(neun)’ has the meanings of ‘causes and reasons’ and ‘standards of judgment’ and this paper is focused on the latter. Based on the meaning of 'standards of judgment', this paper suggests content-based teaching methodology of the connective through the presentations of meaning, of situations in use to practices in stages. On the stage of the meaning presentation, the teaching method that the learners can comprehend its grammatical meanings through the syntactic and semantic conditions between sentences connected with ‘gie(neun)’ is suggested. Second, on the stage of presentation of situation in use, example sentences used with those constraints ‘gie(neun)’ has are presented so that the learners can explicitly understand the grammaticality of ‘gie(neun)’ type of connectives. Finally, practices in stages from understanding the meaning of ‘gie(neun)’ and restructuring its situation in use by the learners themselves to using the ‘gie(neun)’ type of connectives in practical communicative situations are suggested.
