A needs analysis on the development of a Korean cultural program for Korean learners: A comparison of the Japanese learner group with the Chinese learner group

Since the late 1980's, the studies on Korean cultural education for Korean Language learners have been on going. Korean cultural education has become one of the study fields related to Korean education which is outstandingly growing. Various topics about cultural education have been discussed. However, few studies on the specific population of Korean learners have been done. This study is to analyze the needs of the two groups, Japanese speakers and Chinese speakers, on the Korean Language and Korean cultural program. To obtain data for the development for a Korean cultural program for Korean learners, a survey was implemented. The subjects were 250 Korean learners consisting of two groups at the KLI (Korean Language Institute) of Yonsei University. As a result of the study, the researcher analysed and compared the needs of the two groups. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups in several areas. These findings will be able to be applied to the practice of Korean education such as developing a Korean cultural program and a textbook for Korean learners.
