In this paper we attempt to explore the development of cohesion by Korean children in their early stages of infancy. We distinguish two stages of the development: the stage before text construction and the stage of text construction. The stage before text construction is further divided into the word stage and the sentence stage. Children tend to expand their utterances by repeating or modifying words at the word stage, and by repeating sentences at the sentence stage, which has the result of expanding their utterance unit in the process of advancing to the stage of text construction. We have observed that, at the initial stage of text construction, children make their discourse coherent by merely copying the form of the antecedent sentence. Children have a tendency to connect sentences by replacing some parts of the antecedent sentence and repeating all the rest. After the text construction stage comes cohesion based on sentence meanings and cohesive devices. That is, two sentences are connected by the related propositional meanings or speech acts, or by the use of cohesive devices such as 'repetition', 'anaphora', 'lexical substitution', 'ellipsis', 'conjunctions', etc. The most frequent type of cohesive device is 'repetition'. It should be noted that, as a general rule, lexical substitution shows itself only under the form '-geos'. It is also important that the use of anaphora and ellipsis is characterized by the simplicity of the forms. Conjunctions connect two sentences either at the semantic level or at the discourse level.
