Refusal speech act realization patterns of Japanese learners of advanced or highly-advanced Korean language

  • 62

Acquisition of pragmatic features is as necessary as acquisition of grammatical rules in order to communicate successfully in a foreign language. It is difficult for Korean language learners to know how to refuse or request without being rude, or how to avoid saying things that are not suitable for a certain setting. It is likely that even advanced or highly-advanced Korean language learners who have the knowledge of grammatical correctness are not confident enough in pragmatic appropriation. Learners who have no pragmatic competence in a target language will depend on their mother tongue when they command target language. Due to this pragmatic transfer from the mother tongue, pragmatic errors will occur. This pragmatic transfer will be more obvious in dispreffered seconds as refusals. This paper will focus on the pragmatic transfer in Japanese learner's refusal speech act realization. Specifically, refusal speech act realization patterns of Japanese learners of advanced or highly-advanced Korean language(JK) will be compared to those of native Japanese language speakers(JJ) and native Korean language speakers(KK). This comparison will show whether JK has the similar features of JJ or KK, and finally clarify that in what situation JK is influenced from JJ and in what situation JK is convergent to KK.
