The aim of this study is to establish the developmental stages of the request-making ability by Korean children of 12-35 months by analyzing the proposition contents, the linguistic forms, and the strategies used. The proposition contents develops from the stage of satisfying internal needs to the stage of fulfilling desires caused in the surroundings. At first, they use sounds with an expressive function and the word 'mother' as a performative. At the next stage, they use one-word sentences, telegraphic speeches, and pragmatic markers such as '-ə(yo), -əra'. They are able to make requests by effectively using rhythms, repetition, politeness expression '-yo', and by justifying their needs. This study shows that the request-making ability of Korean children progresses in the following stages: 1) the stage of needs expression by sounds, 2) the stage of needs expression by directions, 3) the stage of needs expression by asking 4) the stage of problem-solving verbal requests.
