In former researches on textbook illustration have been pointed out that the illustrations contained in language textbook serve functions including decorating, reinforcing, summarizing, and facilitating the understanding of captions. Until now they have not yet provided a concrete foundation for the development of textbook illustrations for second language learners. Even illustrations are considered as an important part of a textbook, yet these are treated as embellishments, not essential factors in student's advancement and understanding. This relegation to secondary status of visual design leads to illustrations which interfere with comprehension. To avoid this problem research should be done on firm theoretical factors which the field of semiotics can provide. This paper aims to examine semiotic architecture of language textbook illustrations. This investigation is foundation on communication theory and semiotic theories developed by two co-founders, F.de. Saussure and Ch.S. Perice. First I explain the relationship between image and language as well as the conept of iconotext - a mixture of image and language. I also introduce the key concepts of semiotics. Based on these concrete theories, I analyse and compare two second language textbooks - ‘Pathfinder in Korean’ for Korean learners and ‘Themen’ for German learners.
