Principles of Content-Based Language Teaching: Preliminary Inquiries Into Its Effectiveness in Teaching Korean as a Second Language

  • 51

As part of an ongoing research on effective approaches to teaching and learning Korean as a Second Language(KSL), this study offers a brief overview of some past and present key methods in second/foreign language education and how they paved a path for the development of a new, more wholistic approach, namely the CBLT (Content-Based Language Teaching) approach to language teaching and learning. Core benefits of the CBLT approach in terms of optimal input, the power of reading, and cognitive development are discussed. Furthermore, several fundamental principles of the CBLT approach are highlighted to identify some important factors that influence and support language learners acquisition of the target language. The latter part of this paper introduces a sample model of a real Korean as a Second Language classroom where learners are supported with the CBLT principles for optimal learning. The model shows a week by week schedule of a content-based language teaching and learning program by which learners can acquire language in a natural, meaningful, purposeful and effective manner within an abundant supply of wholistic methods and resources. Further study will continue to elaborate on the model as it is being conducted in a real-life setting. Detailed inquiries into the actual benefits of the CBLT approach on KSL education will be conducted to deepen our knowledge and understanding about the feasibility of the CBLT approach on KSL education respectively and on language education in general.
