This article presents theoretical and practical considerations for adopting an eclectic client-centered approach in developing a teacher-educating program. Korean teacher education has often focused on a traditional competency-based approach mainly adopting top-down methods, while recent foreign language teacher education has shown a client-centered approach with bottom-up methods to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Considering the different needs of teachers and their classroom environments, an eclectic client-centered approach makes teacher education more efficient within the limited time frame. This approach is eclectic in that it utilizes top-down methods as well as bottom-up methods. It is illustrated with a workshop designed to introduce contents such as knowledge, skills and attitude to high school Korean teachers in Japan.
