This study aims at an effective educational method of ‘-에/-에서’ by constructing a semantic map model of the Locative case marker ‘-에/-에서’ and the German preposition of place ‘in’ and examining the usage patterns and error types regarding ‘-에/-에서’ made by beginner level German-speaking learners of Korean. To this end, attention was paid to common error patterns of German-speaking Korean learners’ use of ‘-에/-에서’ and the error patterns seen with Korean-speaking learners of German in the use of the preposition of place ‘in’. In current educational methods, the choice of ‘-에/-에서’ is generally explained on the basis of whether the predicate of the sentence is an action verb or a state verb, or whether the speaker is in a rather static or dynamic emotional state. In particular, it is found difficult for learners at the beginner level to understand the semantic differentiation of ‘-에/-에서’ based on the specifics of space. As an alternative, this paper proposes an educational method to explain the meaning range of ‘-에/-에서’ through the concept of destination point, current position, internal location, and contact point based on the semantic map model.
