This study aims to examine the use of the tense-aspect morpheme ‘-essess-’ of native Korean speakers and Korean learners, and to identify the perception of Korean learners’ ‘-essess-’. For this, the large-scale Korean corpus of the two groups was analyzed to examine the frequency of use of ‘-essess-’, and the types of error in the learner’s corpus were investigated according to proficiency. In addition, the semantic function and the types of Korean predicates combined with ‘-essess-’ between the two groups were also compared and analyzed according to Aktionsart. To this end, there was a difference in the frequency of use and the types of lexical aspects used in combination with ‘-essess-’ between native Korean speakers and Korean learners. Especially, it was found that learners’ insufficient perception of ‘-essess-’ as a complex form influenced errors in the form and meaning of ‘-essess-’. This study analyzes a large corpus and compares the use of ‘-essess-’ between native speakers and learners in detail. It confirms that learners’ lack awareness of the form and meaning of ‘-essess-’ through error analysis, and demonstrates the need for teaching and learning ‘-essess-’ as a complex form.
