This study aims to examine the studies on Korean politeness in terms of ‘the issue of deriving macro-sociocultural meaning from micro-interactions’ and ‘the issue of stereotype generation in cross-cultural politeness researches’, and to further suggest the necessity of studying Korean politeness based on an inter-cultural perspective. To this end, this study carefully reviewed the question of how to view ‘individual’ and ‘culture’ that realize politeness at the socio-cultural level. As a result, it is not appropriate to derive the macro socio-cultural meaning from the interaction between individual speakers as it is. Second, it is necessary to examine politeness from the perspective of diversity by discriminating around subcultural groups by variables. Thus, it is suggested to introduce an intercultural perspective that recognizes ‘individual’ and ‘culture’ as non-fixed, variable, multilayered, and complex concepts into the study of politeness.
