The purpose of this study is to analyze the fixed expressions of politeness utilized in a Korean email corpus to identify specific politeness strategy markers being used by Korean college students. To this end, the dataset was collected from 82 Korean college students. The entire Students’ Email Corpus(SEC) consists of 146 emails written by both Korean male(SEC_M) and female(SEC_F) students. The Wordsmith 8.0 program is used to classify the fixed expressions of politeness of the Korean email corpus. As a result, ‘Gamsahabnida’ is used as a positive politeness strategy marker, and ‘Hoksi’ is used as a negative politeness strategy marker in this research. This corpus-based study takes a pragmatic look at the distinctive polite expressions and strategy markers that are used in actual emails written by native Korean speakers. This study provides authentic data applications in teaching and learning Korean politeness for effective email communication.
