A Longitudinal Study of Sentence Endings of Beginner Level Korean Language Learners

  • 17

This study analyzed the pattern of learning and the development of sentence endings for beginner Korean learners. The research team studied 8 participants for 5 months to collect free conversation data. With the data, a longitudinal spoken corpus for Korean learners was constructed, and 13,592 sentence endings were extracted and analyzed using the AntConc program. In this study, the order of appearance of sentence endings, the frequency of utterances, the number of speakers, accuracy, and usage patterns were observed. As a result, among the sentence endings, the use of ‘-ayo/eoyo’ in the declarative sentence appeared as an overwhelming majority. Second, as the number of collections increased, the proportion of interrogative sentence endings gradually increased. Third, as the number of collections increased, frequency of the use of ‘-a/eo’ which was a disassembly of the declarative and interrogative sentence endings increased. Fourth, the general accuracy of sentence endings was higher than 95%, but at the third month of learning, the use of predicate was diversified, and the accuracy was somewhat lower as pre-final endings were used. Fifth, the accuracy of the imperative sentence endings ‘-(eu)seyo’ was significantly lower than other sentence endings. Sixth, it was possible to observe learners’ inter-lingual system using sentence endings without the intention of closing sentences.
