Also, the agent’s attitude toward the situation was analyzed, to look into whether each meaning was correlated with positive, negative, or neutral contexts. The results are summarized as follows: 1) When the subject of a sentence is the second person or the third person, ‘-ji anhoel su eops-’ is used to express [inevitability]. 2) When the subject of a sentence is the first person, other meanings can be expressed; If ‘-ji anhoel su eops-’ collocates with emotional verbs, then [unavoidable occurrence] is expressed. And if it collocates with agency verbs, then [obligation] can be expressed only in positive contexts. By contrast, ‘-ji anhoel su eops-’ is widely used to express [inevitability] in negative or neutral contexts. 3) Since these three meanings are realized in stages on a syntactic, semantic, and discourse level, it is helpful to present a checklist explaining the conditions for occurrence of each meaning in grammar class to foreign students.
