음악이 제2언어 습득에 미치는 긍정적인 영향에 대한 많은 연구결과가 보고되고 있다. 음악을 통한 언어학습은 음운인식, 단어암기력, 읽기, 말하기 능력을 향상시키고 그 결과 전반적인 인지발달을 유발한다. 단순히 음악을 수업에 활용했을 때의 효과성뿐만 아니라 인지적, 신경과학적인 관점에서 음악이 언어학습에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구가 해외에서는 활발히 진행되고 있지만, 한국어교육에서는 이러한 연구가 지극히 미흡하다. 따라서 음악을 한국어교육에 활용한 체계적인 커리큘럼이 아직까지 개발되지 않고 있다. 이 연구는 음악이 언어학습에 미치는 영향에 대해 알아보고 있다. 음악처리 과정과 언어처리과정의 신경계의 유사성, 음악과 어휘암기력과의 관련성, 음악이 제2언어학습에 미치는 긍정적인 효과에 대해서 자세히 언급하고 있다. 특히 언어와 같이, 음악이 감정과 느낌 이상의 의미를 전달한다는 Koelsch(2011)의 주장을 바탕으로 한국어 어휘학습 지도안을 제시하였다. 이 연구를 통해 한국어 교사들이 음악이 언어학습에 미치는 긍정적인 영향에 대해 인지하는 기회를 갖고 음악을 수업에 적극 활용하기를 기대한다. 논리적 증거를 기반으로 고안된 음악을 활용한 한국어 어휘 학습지도안은 그것의 효과성이 입증된다면 혁신적이고 유용한 어휘학습 지도안이 될 것이다.
A majority of empirical evidence has shown that music attributes to facilitate second language acquisition in phonological awareness, verbal memory, reading, speech, and general cognitive abilities. Such intimate connection between music and language learning has drawn the attention of linguists and attempts to incorporate music in language learning have been actively studied. To date, however, in Korean language education, there is a lack of research on the benefits of music in second language learning from the cognitive and neuroscience perspective. Consequently, to date no systematic organized curriculum attempts to incorporate music to Korean language classes. This study investigates the benefits of music on language learning. Neural similarity in processing of music and language, the correlation between music and verbal memory, and the positive effects of music on second language learning have been examined. In particular, a Korean vocabulary teaching method was designed based on the findings by Koelsch (2011); like language, music can convey meaning beyond emotions and feelings. It is expected that the benefits of music on language learning will allow Korean teachers to use music actively in class. A Korean vocabulary teaching method through music will be an innovative and useful vocabulary teaching means if its effectiveness is proven. The further research will verify it to establish a convincing Korean vocabulary model. (Chung-Ang University)
