『莊子』를 통한 도가적 관용론 구성에 대한 연구

Constructing the Daoistic Theory of Toleration from Zhuangzi

관용은 특정한 대상을 향한 반대를 전제로 한다. 하지만, 관용은 단순한 반대의 행위에 머물지 않는다. 관용은 관용의 대상에 대한 반대를 유지하면서, 이에 더해 관용의 대상을 향한 반대가 어떠한 형태로든 실현되는 것을 다시금 반대한다. 관용이라는 행위의 특수성은 관용의 대상을 향한 두 가지 형태의 반대가 동시에 실천된다는 데에 있다. 즉, 첫 번째 형태의 반대인 관용의 대상의 행동이나 이념 등을 자신의 행동이나 이념 등으로 받아들일 수 없다는 의미에서의 반대와, 두 번째 형태의 반대인 관용의 대상을 향한 반대가 실현되어 관용의 대상을 제한하는 것을 거부하는 반대가 동시에 실천되는 행위가 관용인 것이다. 논자는 첫 번째 반대의 속성으로 행위자의 숙고와 자율성에 주목하고, 두 번째 반대의 속성으로 첫 번째 반대에 대한 의존성에 주목하였다. 본 연구에서 논자는 이를 관용을 구성하는 핵심적인 형식적 요소로 간주하며 이 두 가지 반대를 각각 숙고된 자율적 반대와 의존적 반대가 부른다. 본 연구의 목적은 논자가 관용의 특수성을 대변하는 요소로 주장하는 이 두 가지 형태의 반대를 장자의 저작인 『莊子』에서 추적하는 것이다. 이를 위해 논자는 『莊子』 등장하는 세 가지 이야기를 사례로 그 안에 숙고된 자율적 반대와 의존적 반대가 발견되는지를 검토해보았고, 그 결과 검토한 사례에서 관용의 핵심적인 요소인 두 가지 형태의 반대가 존재함을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 논자는 『莊子』가 전개하는 도가 철학을 관용적인 철학으로 간주할 일차적인 계기가 마련되었다고 주장한다. 마지막으로, 논자는 『莊子』의 사례를 검토하는 데에 사용한 방법, 즉 특정한 이론체계 안에서 관용의 특수한 형식적 요소의 유무를 추적하는 방법을 특정 이론이 관용을 허용하는지를 파악하는 일차적인 수단으로 활용할 가능성을 제시한다.

Toleration presupposes denial towards a object of toleration. However, toleration is not limited to a mere act of denial. Toleration, while maintaining the act of denial, adds an additional denial of any form of realization of the initial act of denial towards the object of toleration. The peculiarity of the act of toleration lies in the simultaneous practice of these two forms of denials. In other words, the the first form of denial, in the sense that you cannot accept the behavior or ideology of the object of toleration as your own, and the second form of denial, the denial toward the realization of the initial denial, compose the act of toleration. The purpose of this study is to trace the denials of these two forms, which the author argues as an element representing the specificity of toleration, in Zhuangzi's work 『莊子』. To this end, the author examines four stories in 『莊子』 as examples. Through this, the author concludes that in 『莊子』, there are ample evidences showing the Daiosm in 『莊子』 should be regarded as a philosophical system qualifying itself as a tolerant. In addition, the author suggests to use the method of tracking the presence of specific elements of toleration within a specific theoretical system as a primary means of identifying whether a specific theory is tolerant.
