목적: 본 연구는 한국어 한자어 ‘반(半)’의 의미를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 방법: 사전 기술 및 말뭉치의 예문을 통해서 ‘반(半)’의 의미를 분석하고자 한다. ‘반(半)’의 용법에 따라 주로 ‘반(半)’이 명사, 접두사, 정도부사로 쓰일 때 각각의 의미를 살펴본다. 결과: 명사로서의 ‘반(半)’은 단위명사와 결합하는 경우 수사의 특성을 드러내며 1/2의 수량의 의미를 나타낸다. 그 이외에 경우 예문에 따라 ‘절반의 분량, 크기, 정도’의 의미와 ‘거리, 사물의 중간이나 중간이 되는 부분’의 의미를 나타낼 수 있다. 접두사로서 ‘반(半)-’은 ‘불완전한 정도’를 나타내며 존재론적 유형의 지시체가 있는 어근과 결합할 때 부정적 기술자의 기능을 할 수 있다. 정도부사로서의 ‘반(半)’은 사전에서 기술되지 않지만, 말뭉치의 용례에서 발견된다. 이때 ‘반(半)’도 ‘불완전한 정도’를 나타내며 주로 부정적인 의미를 나타내는 용언을 수식한다. 결론: 이 결과는 한자어 연구에서 한자어가 실제 쓰이는 용례를 바탕으로 그 의미에 대한 정밀한 분석이 필요하다는 점을 보여준다. 이러한 분석은 어학 분야의 빈칸을 채울 뿐만 아니라, 한국어 교육 분야에도 의미가 있다.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the meaning of Sino-Korean ‘Ban(half)’ in Contemporary Korean. Method: In order to achieve this research purpose, we refer to dictionary descriptions and sentences in the corpus to analyze the meaning of ‘Ban’ as a noun, a prefix, and an adverb of degree. Results: The results reveal that as a noun, when ‘Ban’ combined with a classifier, it shows the character of numeral and represents the quantity of 1/2. In other cases, depending on the context of the sentence, it can indicate ‘half portion, size, degree’ and ‘the middle or middle part of distance or an object’. As a prefix, ‘Ban’ signifies ‘imperfect’ degree and can serve as a negational descriptor when combined with a root with an ontological referent. ‘Ban’ as an adverb of degree is not included in the dictionary, but it is found in some sentences in the corpus. As an adverb of degree, it also indicates the ‘imperfect’ degree and modifies predicates with negative meaning. Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of precise analysis on the meaning of Sino-Korean words based on their actual usage. These results not only fill gaps in the field of Korean linguistics, but also have implications for Korean language education.
