This essay opens with a question about how to reestablish poetry’s therapeutic power in a pandemic situation and use literature classes as a site for overcoming the global crisis. I have focused on learners’ psychological well-being and aimed to help them experience “positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishments” in literature classes. By implementing two representative poetry therapy models developed by Nicholas Mazza and Arleen Hynes, I propose three phases (support/recognition, perception/examination/juxtaposition, and action/ integration/application) and illustrate two exemplary texts and associated writing prompts that assist learners in coping with negative emotions and recovering from personal and social challenges. I come to the conclusion that introducing a text with expressive writing and a dialogical process could be an effective way to promote healing in a time of pandemic.
