I thought that I don’t qualify to call Korean my ‘national language’ -Identity and authenticity in Korean-Australian heritage language learners-

국어라는 말을 쓸 자격이 없다고 생각하고 있었던 것 같습니다: 계승어로서의 한국어 호주 학습자의 정체성과 진정성

본 연구는 호주 대학교에서 계승어로서의 한국어 수업을 들은 동포 학생의 정체성 형성과 이와 관련이 있는 진정성 인식을 탐구하고자 한다. 호주의 한국인 이민 역사는 미국에 비해 짧은 편이다. 이는 최근 호주 인구조사에서 드러난 결과 중 다음을 반영하고 있다. 호주 인구 조사 결과(2016)에 따르면, 한국계 응답자의 95% 정도가 한국어를 가정언어로 사용하고 있다고 하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 대학생인 젊은 호주 동포에 초점을 맞춰 그들의 언어 사용과 정체성, 더 나아가 정체성 형성 과정에서 이어지는 진정성의 문제에 대해 알아보고자 한다. 이를 위해 연구 도구로 계승어로서의 한국어 수업에서 사용된 공동 온라인 블로그 작성 활동을 사용하였다. 동포 학생이 블로그에 작성한 다양한 주제의 글을 분석하여 부모님의 영향, 이중언어의 장점, 단일어주의 사상 등의 요소가 정체성 형성 및 진정성 인식에 가장 큰 영향을 미친다는 것을 밝히고자 한다.

This study aims to understand the process of identity development and perception of speaker’s authenticity in students of Korean as a heritage language enrolled in an Australian university. The history of Korean-Australians in more recent and different compared to that of Korean-Americans. Statistics from the 2016 Australian national census show that 95% of respondents of Korean heritage speak Korean as a home language. Within this reality this paper, by focusing on the Korean language use of young Korean-Australians, aims at revealing the process of identity development and the issue of authenticity that arise when developing bilingualism and biculturalism. As investigation tool the researcher used an on-line blog writing activity adopted for a university course of Korean as heritage language. By analysing posts and comments uploaded on the blog, this study reveals that parents’ influence, experiences related to the advantages of bilingualism and a strong monolingual discourse influence identity development and perceptions of authenticity in Korean-Australian university students of Korean.
