Korean Parents’ Attitudes Toward Bilingual Education in the U.S.

재미동포 아동의 이중 언어 교육에 대한 학부모 태도 연구

이 연구에서는 미국 내 이중 언어 교육에 대한 한국 부모들의 태도에 대해 요인분석을 실시하였다. 즉 계승으로서의 한국어와 영어를 함께 습득하는 것에 대한 부모들의 어떠한 태도가 영향을 미치는지를 살펴본 것이다.이 결과 ‘중요성’과 ‘실용성’이 부모의 이중 언어 교육에 대한 태도를 구성하는 주요 요인으로 나타났다. t-검정에서 이중 언어 교육의 ‘중요성’에 대한 평균값은 동부와 서부 거주 부모들 간에 유의한 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났으나 ‘실용성’은 서부에 거주하는 부모들이 더 높게 나타났다. 이 연구 결과는 자녀의 이중 언어 교육에 대한 부모의 태도가 거주 지역에 따라 달라질 수 있음을 시사하며 ‘실용성’은 명백히 지역의 영향을 받고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 즉 부모들이 성공적으로 이중 언어를 사용하는 사람을 더 많이 접하는 것이 이중 언어 교육의 실용성에 대해 보다 긍정적 태도를 갖게 될 수 있다는 것을 의미한다.

This study surveyed and analyzed the attitudes of Korean parents regarding their children’s bilingual education including Korean as a heritage language. The data were collected from 241 Korean parents residing in the East Coast (129 resident from Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey states) and the West Coasts (112 residents from California, Washington, and Oregon states) of USA. Statistical analysis using t-test showed that ‘the importance’ and ‘the usefulness’ of bilingual education were the main two factors acknowledged by the Korean parents. Regarding ‘the importance’ of bilingual education, Korean parents living in both sides of the Coast had positive attitude regardless of their regions of residence. However, on ‘the usefulness’ of bilingual education, Korean parents residing in the West Coast showed significantly more positive attitude.
