본 연구는 영어 배치평가의 평가 영역과 평가 문항의 구성 방안의 사례를 조사하고 이를 통하여 교육과정을 기반으로 한 한국어 배치평가 개발에 대한 제언을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본고에서 살펴본 배치평가 도구는 ‘The Quick Placement Test by Oxford University Press and Cambridge ESOL’, ‘English Unlimited Placement Test by Cambridge University Press’, ‘ESL Placement Test by ETS’, ‘English Placement Test(EPT) by CaMLA’로 영국에서 개발된 시험이 2종, 미국에서 개발된 시험이 2종이다. 이러한 배치평가 도구는 신뢰도를 중요시하면서도 실용성 또한 고려하여 짧은 시간 내에 객관적인 평가가 가능하도록 고안된 것이 특징이라고 할 수 있다. 이를 위하여 어휘와 문법, 단문 파악 등의 언어 지식적 측면이 배제되지 않고, 상당히 적극적으로 활용되었다. 또한 주어진 교육과정의 교육내용을 평가에 적극적으로 반영하기 위하여 유럽공통참조기준, ‘ATLE의 Can-DO statements’를 토대로 하거나 혹은 구체적인 교육내용을 담은 교재를 평가 문항에 대입하는 모습을 볼 수 있었다. 더불어 학습자의 부담을 줄이기 위하여 평가를 이원화하거나 속도 평가의 장점을 택한 경우도 있었다. 이러한 고찰을 통하여 본고에서는 각 기관의 교육과정을 반영한 ‘Can-Do’ list 작성, 주요 범주의 설정, 숙달도에 따른 평가 도구의 이원화, 평가 영역 확대 등의 필요성을 제언하였다.
This paper aims to address the necessity of structuring test items in order to develop language placement tests that reflect the course curriculum. The placement tests that this paper examined are ‘The Quick Placement Test by Oxford University Press and Cambridge ESOL’, ‘English Unlimited Placement Test by Cambridge University Press’, ‘ESL Placement Tests by ETS’, and ‘English Placement Test(EPT) by CaMLA. By analyzing categories of assessment and evaluation questions of foreign placement tests, this paper illustrated features of prominent placement tests used worldwide. Also, this paper made proposals on the basis of its findings that can enhance future placement tests development in the Korean language. These tests emphasized the importance of the reliability rating and that it is designed to quickly deliver objective test results. To achieve this purpose, the tests did not exclude test questions that gauge the test-taker’s vocabulary and grammar capabilities. That is, these tests many of the language skill categories such as vocabulary, grammar, short passage comprehension question are actively utilized.
