Language and Culture Learning through Project Work: Perceptions of University Students of Korean as a Foreign Language

프로젝트 활동을 통한 언어 및 문화 학습: 외국어로서 한국어를 배우는 대학생의 인식을 중심으로

교육관련 연구에서는 실세계에서 접할 수 있는 과제들을 통해서 학습자들이 새로운 지식을 쌓고 배양할 수 있는 프로젝트 활동에 대한 장점들에 대해서 꾸준히 밝혀왔다. 외국어 교육에서도 실제적인 목적을 두고 과제를 수행하는 프로젝트 활동은 학습자들의 동기와 참여도를 높힐 수 있고 언어 능력과 지식을 향상시키는 데 도움이 된다고 주장해 왔다. 또한 연구자들은 학습자들에게 목표 언어의 문화 지식뿐만 아니라 자국 문화와 목표어 문화간에 이해도 및 문화간 인식 능력을 좀 더 비판적으로 인식할 수 있도록 하는 목적으로 프로젝트 활동을 활용할 수 있다고 보았다. 본고에서는 싱가포르 대학교 내 중급 학습자들을 대상으로 10주 동안 시행된 한국문화 관련 프로젝트에 대해서 논의했다. 이 프로젝트에서는 참여자들이 한국 문화와 사회에 대한 다양한 분야를 조사하고 마지막에는 조사한 내용을 발표했다. 본 연구에서는 프로젝트 활동이 학습자들의 언어 능력(어휘, 쓰기, 읽기)과 문화 지득 습득에 얼마나 유용한 지를 밝히고자 하였다. 연구 결과에서는 학습자들이 한국 문화와 한국 사회에 대해서 좀 더 깊은 인식을 갖게 되었다는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 또한 학습자들은 프로젝트를 통해서 자국 문화와 한국 문화간에 다른 인식을 갖게 되었다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 학습자들이 프로젝트 활동을 유의미하게 여겼으며 독립적으로 조사하고 발표하는 과정에서 자신감과 성취감을 갖는데 도움이 되었다는 점도 연구를 통해 알 수 있었다.

Education research has pointed to the merits of project work, which can induce the construction of new knowledge through meaningful real-world tasks. In foreign language education, researchers have argued that project work can promote learning through authentic tasks for authentic purposes, enhance student motivation and engagement, and integrate language and content learning. Such content typically includes knowledge of the target language culture, with some researchers advocating the use of project work to foster intercultural competence and critical cultural awareness. This paper describes the use of a 10-week cultural project in an intermediate Korean language course at a Singaporean university, which engaged students in researching aspects of Korean culture and society and producing final oral presentations on topics of their choice. A study of the project’s usefulness for students’ language and culture learning reveals that students perceived it to be useful for their vocabulary acquisition, and their writing and reading skills. They also reported gaining deeper insights into Korea, its culture and its society. In addition, there is evidence that students developed some degree of critical cultural awareness, leading them to a reappraisal of their own country and culture. On the whole, the students found the project to be enjoyable and meaningful, and felt that it helped them gain self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment through their independent research and presentations.
