Determinants of R&D Project Performance: The Moderating Effect of ESG Management

전 세계 수많은 기업은 R&D(연구개발)를 전략적 수단으로 활용하여 경영성과를 달성하고 경쟁력을 높이는 데 집중하고 있다. 성공적인 R&D 성과는 산업 발전과 기업의 경쟁력 강화로 이어지는 장점이 있지만 대외 환경, 정책적, 기술적, 조직적 요인 등 높은 투자 불확실성과 리스크가 존재한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 기업에서는 R&D 프로젝트를 다양한 목적 달성을 위해 수행하며, 이에 대한 체계적이고 전략적인 관리 역시 기업 차원의 성공을 위해 필요하다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 상황을 배경으로 R&D 프로젝트에서의 리스크관리와 편익관리가 프로젝트의 세부적인 성과에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 이와 함께, 최근 기업들의 주목을 받는 지속가능경영 방법인 ESG 경영이 R&D 분야에서 프로젝트 성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 분석을 추가로 수행하였다. 연구를 위해 기업, 연구기관, 대학교에서 R&D 프로젝트에 참여 경험이 있는 응답자를 설문 대상으로 선정 후 설문조사를 실시하여 해당 데이터를 활용한 통계적 분석을 수행하였다. 본 연구의 분석 결과를 통해 프로젝트 리스크관리는 프로젝트 관리 성과 및 목표달성에 부분적으로 영향을 미치며, 미래지향성과에는 영향을 미치지 않는 것이 확인되었다. 또한 편익지속성 관리는 프로젝트의 미래지향성과에 영향을 미치고 있는 점을 확인하였으며, 추가로 수행한 분석에서는 R&D 분야에 있어 ESG 경영 중 환경(E)부문은 리스크관리 및 편익관리와 프로젝트 성과 사이에서 조절 효과를 가지고 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 실증 분석을 통해 기업이 R&D 프로젝트의 수행 과정에서 여러 세분화된 프로젝트 관리 요인에 대한 관리 활동을 통하여 성과를 거둘 수 있음을 검증하였으며, 지속가능경영 활동인 ESG의 세부 구성 요소 중에서 R&D 분야에 적용할 경우 성과를 도출할 수 있는 요소를 실증 분석을 통하여 확인하였다는 점에서 그 의미가 있다.

Many companies are focusing on enhancing competitiveness and contributing to business performance by R&D as a strategic tool. Successful R&D performance leads to industrial development and corporate competitiveness enhancement, but there are high risks in R&D investment due to the influence of external environment, technology, and organizational factors. R&D projects are carried out to achieve various purposes, and after all, systematic and strategic execution is important. It was verified how the risk management and benefit management of the R&D project affect the detailed performance of the R&D project. The additional impact of ESG management, which has become a hot topic in corporate management, on project performance in the R&D field was also analyzed. In this study, those who have participated in R&D projects at companies, research institutes, universities were surveyed and analyzed. First, it was found that R&D project risk management has partially an effect on project management performance and goal achievement, but has no effect on future-oriented performance. Second, benefit sustainability management had an impact on the future-oriented performance of the project. Third, E(environment) among ESG in the R&D field showed a moderating effect between risk management, benefit management and project performance. It was confirmed that it is possible to achieve results by utilizing various subdivided project management factors to derive long-term performance of R&D projects. Among ESG management activities as sustainable management, management activities that can be applied to the R&D field were demonstrated in practice.
