The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze speech proverbs of Korea and Japan to prepare a plan on Korean language and culture education for Japanese learners. Proverbs are considered difficult for foreign learners to study on their own because they have the culture of each country. Thus, it is significant to compare the meanings and characteristics between both Korean and Japanese proverbs to draw up a plan on Korean proverb education for foreigners of certain languages. Proverbs are one way of expression that naturally represent a culture in daily life. A proverb should be in a short sentence, delivers one’s intention accurately, be persuasive, and enable an effective expression of speech. However, proverbs are difficult to understand for foreign learners because they reflect a country’s unique culture, customs, thoughts, wisdom, way of life, and many others. Thus, it is important to come up with a plan on proverb education for foreigners to understand and correctly use proverbs. This study has arranged a Korean language and Korean culture education plan for Japanese learners by using the similarities of proverbs from the comparison and analysis result of both countries’ proverbs.
