Korean Language Skills Education: Achievements and tasks on the studies of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing

  • 45

This study analyzed research papers published in the <Journal of Korean Language Education> from the first to the 26-2 issue, considering the number of papers on Korean language skills education, research by period, and research by topic. Research on Korean Language skills education has been conducted in two research papers regarding listening education published in the fifth issue of the <Journal of Korean Language Education> in 1994, and the topic of skills education was most widely studied during the mid-2000s. Comparing the number of published papers by skill, speaking and writing education were relatively actively studied, while listening and reading education were less studied. Furthermore, looking at research by topic, studies on listening and speaking education were overly concentrated on General Education. Studies on reading education showed a balance between general education and teaching-learning methods, yet it hardly touched upon the evaluation aspect. Studies on writing education focused more on teaching-learning methods compared to other areas. Based on the above analysis, future tasks for studies on Korean language skills education require quantitative expansion which must be achieved in this field. Further studies are especially needed in listening and reading education. Moreover, diverse topics should be treated in a balanced manner, instead of being skewed in certain topics.
