This study aims to examine through newspaper editorials the multicultural discourse in Korean society of the 2000s. Editorials as a kind of media discourse expressing opinions or assertions function to form or reflect that society’s public opinions. According to the latest discourse analysis theory, newspaper articles and editorials dealing with current issues are recognized as part of politics in that they reproduce political discourse. Composed of assertions and grounds for arguments, editorials possess argumentativeness, a key attribute of political discourse. This paper explores the specific details and forms of multicultural discourse through argumentation analysis. The primary assertion is to insist on support systems, systematic language education, change in the awareness and attitude of respecting other cultures and political rights for multicultural families. On the back side of this lie the values of respect for other cultures, economic benefits from a multicultural society and multiculturalism at the societal and national levels. Such an understanding, it is hoped, will provide an opportunity to reflect on the multicultural policy or reality of Korean society and to search for a future direction of multiculturalism.
