Sociocultural characteristics have significant influence upon people’s speech acts. This research focused on refusal psychological burden, one of the significant sociocultural characteristics that affects speakers’ refusal expressions, between Korean speakers(KS) and Hong Kong Cantonese speakers(CS). In order to compare the refusal psychological burden between KS and CS, a 5-point scale survey was conducted on 135 KS and 133 CS followed by after-research interviews (12 KS and 15 CS). The SPSS analysis results showed that 14 out of the 18 refusal situations between KS and CS had significant differences on their refusal psychological burden and the level of intimacy and social differences between speakers had different degree of influences on their refusal psychological burden. Both KS and CS showed the highest level of refusal psychological burden for wedding invitation, but the degree of their psychological burden differed due to the differences of wedding culture, conflict handling strategy and the level of individualism. The findings of this research can be used as references and educational contents for Korean refusal speech act as well as sociocultural education program for Hong Kong Korean students
