Urbanization in Sub-Saharan Africa and its characteristics

Africa is the fastest urbanizing continent in the world. The population of Africa is expected to double by 2050 and this growth is due in large part to the large urban population growth. It is generally accepted that urbanization results from rural exodus, but as far as Africa is concerned, it is urban fertility that plays an important role. Moreover, this high fertility also applies in rural regions, unlike on other continents. This can be seen in particular in the two sub-Saharan countries where the fertility rate is very high: Nigeria and Ethiopia. Africa is thus exposed to the challenges of rapid population growth and rapid urbanization. And this leads to characteristics specific to this continent. The purpose of this article is to show the particularities of the urbanization of Africa that are specific to it. No continent in the world has experienced it at such speed. We will focus particularly on certain sub-Saharan countries which are characterized by their rapid increase in population. Such a study will make it possible on the one hand, to better prepare what will be necessary in the futur and on the other hand, to make known the advantage as well as the obstacles that foreign companies could face.
